These adorable, flightless birds have waddled their way into our hearts (as well as on to our T-Shirts) and are one of the most adored animals on the planet. But what do we know about these fantastic, free-diving beauties?

As we have our wonderful King Penguin design, let's take a look at some King Penguin facts...

1. With an average height of around 3.1 feet (95cm), the King Penguin is the second largest of all penguin species. The largest being the Emperor Penguin (3.3 feet / 100cm).

2. King Penguins can dive to extraordinary depths. While regular fishing dives tend to measure at around 160ft (50m) below the surface, this super species have been recorded as having reached depths of around 1,600ft (500m).

3. Rather than building a nest, King Penguins carry their eggs on their feet. Incubating the egg in a soft abdominal flap, penguins can move and form huddles with the egg still resting on their feet, also ensuring the egg is protected from the freezing surface. They continue to protect their young from the sub zero temperatures in this way until they are able to regulate their own body temperature.

4. King Penguin chicks are covered in a thick, brown down and when Antarctic explorers first set eyes on the youngsters actually thought them to be a completely separate species of 'woolly penguin'.

5. Adult King Penguins have three layers of insulating down feathers to protect them from the harsh cold conditions and a further, outer layer of waterproof, oily feathers - the perfect adaptation for their long sea voyages in search for food.

6. Although their Conservation status is categorised as 'Least Concern', without urgent action, the future of the King Penguin doesn't look so bright. Scientists estimate that we could lose as much as 70% of the King Penguin population within the next 80 years. King Penguins travel between 300-500km in search of food at an area known as the Antarctic Convergence, where the colder Antarctic ocean meets the comparatively warmer subantarctic waters. As global temperatures rise, and the seas warm, the Convergence shifts, meaning that King Penguins will potentially have to travel a further 200km from their breeding grounds.

7. We can't complete this list without mentioning Brigadier Sir Nils Olav of Edinburgh Zoo who has risen to rank of colonel-in-chief of the Royal Norwegian Guard. THIS IS TRUE!!!

So why the King Penguin T-Shirt design? I'll tell ya...

This design came about initially as a gift to my nephew Charlie who loves penguins, so much so that he's even adopted a penguin!

My nephew Charlie reluctantly agreeing to pose for a photograph with me while he wears his Kids King Penguin T-Shirt!

The design is made up of over 300 individual geometric shapes. This digital illustration technique is known as 'Low Poly' illustration. I tend to use it a lot for my designs, I love how hard, flat, straight-edged shapes can create the illusion of a soft organic subject - in this case the penguin.

The Kids King Penguin t-shirt has had such a lovely reaction from both children and adults alike, that we now have the same design available in adult sizes on shirts and sweaters, as well as being added to our new Kids Jumpers range. So we now have something for everyone - Penguin T shirts and sweatshirts for children or adults.

Kids King Penguin T-Shirt >

King Penguin T-Shirt >

Kids King Penguin Jumper >

King Penguin Sweater >

What do you think?
