Hidden pathways between artistic influences, which came together and loop back around again.

I've long been a fan of Radiohead, their beautiful, complex music is always accompanied by the stunning, dark and often playful artwork of Stanley Donwood . When in need of something to read, I decided to judge a book by its cover and picked up a couple of books by Robert Macfarlane whose covers feature lino prints by Stanley Donwood. 'The Old Ways' & 'Landmarks' are both magnificent nature books with inspiring, poetic examinations of the natural world which have had an equally profound affect on me. I would recommend anyone who is interested in nature, from the smallest detail, read any one of these books. In Landmarks Macfarlane talks about one of his favourite books; the equally brilliant 'The Peregrine' by JA Baker - so obviously I had to read that.

The Peregrine is a diary, of sorts, of Baker's winter-long study of the falcons in the Essex marshes and coast. A lyrical exploration of the fastest animal on the planet that begins to delve into Baker's own connection with, not just the Peregrine, but with nature as a whole. Obviously, from reading such a powerful piece meant that I too then became obsessed (to a lesser extent than Baker), with trying to find Peregrines which I found out were nesting near where I live in Bristol.

Whenever I get the chance, I head to my favourite spot in Bristol and have been known to spend hours waiting for even the slightest glimpse of a falcon. I don't have a great camera with a huge lens and I don't have great binoculars, so often a glimpse is the best I can wish for. But these fleeting sightings of the most incredible bird, as they spiral and stoop at speed were enough for me to try to illustrate them flying over the Avon Gorge. I decided to create this in lino cut - a new hobby of mine (and incidentally one of the mediums Stanley Donwood uses).

It was comforting looking back at this series of events and noticing the influences of JA Baker, Stanley Donwood and Robert Macfarlane. The subject, the style, the story and the invisible pathways between them all.

It's nice when things tie up neatly.

Marc

Since our beginnings in 2016, My Creatures has grown beyond our wildest dreams.
